Hearing audio through PC speakers. Do you have video but no audio ?

These days there are many devices on the market that let you connect to big-screen electronics like home theatre systems, flat-screen televisions and more.

Many televisions and monitors have at least one port so that you don’t have to buy a separate converter or pay someone to install another input. If you use any of the following devices, make sure they are compatible with your system before purchasing them.

Most people have multiple audio devices and speakers. So the OS gets confused – which one should it pass the AV signal to?

How to Get Sound through HDMI Windows 10

How to make the HDMI sound work on Windows 10: If you are facing no audio issues on TV when having connected a Windows 10 device, it is necessary to change the default audio driver by choosing one of the other supported audio driver versions.

The basic or generic integrated audio drivers that come with Windows usually remain outdated and unsupported by hardware vendors most of the time.

Are you sure Hyper-V is enabled on your system? Are you sure that you’ve enabled multiple monitors? Are you sure that both your speakers and your TV are turned on simultaneously at the same time?

I did research on various websites and forums to find the cause and solution to this issue. The below solutions are what I have come up with.

Windows 10 HDMI Audio Not Working – Latest Solutions from 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016

For the last 6 months, there are a lot of solutions from Microsoft and other forums to the issue of sound not going through HDMI in Windows 10.

But I have listed the recent solutions which worked for many.

Make sure your HDMI device is not showing in hidden devices in Device Manager.

  • You can enable or disable your disabled or hidden devices using the Device Manager tool. This is one of several ways to access the Device Manager tool.
  • Also during updates, Microsoft will try to install its integrated graphics drivers. This can cause disturbances in your machine if the correct order is not followed when updating your PC.
  • Here are some of the most common things we see people doing when it comes to setting up dual monitors.

Solving HDMI sound problems can be a daunting task. It requires in-depth technical knowledge that not everyone possesses, so instead of going through an exhaustive list of possible reasons why the user’s HDMI audio isn’t functioning,

Fix #30

The first solution to this is to ensure that your audio playback device “Sound” properties in Windows 10 have its feature for “Listen to Audio through the speakers or headphones, even if devices are connected” enabled.

To do this, you will go to the Control Panel. There are many different methods that can be used in order to take you there, which are listed below.

  • Under Devices > Audio, you will see various options in the left-hand sidebar that you can choose from. Select Playback and then Filter your results by selecting the + button to expand the section and choosing Show Disabled.
  • hen you need to left-click the “Digital Output Device (HDMI)” feature.
  • This makes the device the default option for audio in Windows 10.
  • Now try to reboot the device. This should also fix many of the problems related to audio.

Digital Output Device (HDMI)

Fix #29

The first solution is to check if both the computer and television have an HDMI port.

There are many different ways to connect computers to external sound devices such as “Speakers” – a few of the most common methods include hardware HDMI Cables, Bluetooth, and Wireless.

You see the picture on your TV but the sound is being different from external sound devices.

Fix #28

There are different kinds of USB cables out there. Some have a USB-A plug at one end and another USB-A connector at the other while others have both ends with a micro USB connector. If you can tell which type of cable your computer came with,

it will make things much easier if you ever need to replace it. Otherwise, standardization means that most other micro-USB cables can be used in most cases.

First, use your TV remote to select the correct input. Then try the second fix by using Windows 10 audio properties to enable HDMI audio playback.

Make sure you perform system maintenance after this. You can do this by restarting your Windows 10 PC or laptop. This is necessary to ensure the proper functioning of today’s technology as there are many devices with different ports and configurations.

Fix #27

HP users also faced problems with Windows 10 audio not working.

For example, a user watching a video on the HP ENVY 15-j053cl TouchSmart computer which is running Windows 10 Technical Preview connected to their TV through HDMI.

The HDMI audio output is not shown under the Sound Playback Devices and instead, the Video appeared in Device Manager.

There was an error message that indicated there may be a problem with my graphics card or chipset driver. In previous builds, there were additional messages as well and this part of the system should work properly by now.

One user found that the solution to this problem was to download and install the latest driver update utility on their computer and then update all of their drivers.

Fix #26 – Windows 10 HDMI sound not detected

If you use the Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet with Windows 10, the mouse pointer might become erratic when connected to an HDMI TV.

While this is obvious, it should not be overlooked. It’s good practice to start with the right setup the first time around and not have to make any changes down the road.

There are scaling problems on the second display and screen rendering problems.

So be sure to wait for the final version before testing the TP version one with Surface Pro and HDMI devices.

Fix #25

AMD Radeon graphics card owners have encountered their share of problems. Some do-it-yourself fixes that have worked for other Radeon users are on forums like hardwarecentral.de. For example, there’s a registry fix that may help with underscan or overscan issues.

Fix #24 – Windows 10 no audio HDMI

Audio Front Panel on your computer may stop working, sometimes.

Though this seems to work in Windows 7 or 8.1, it has problems in Win 10.

This problem can also be with Realtek drivers if you are using them.

This seems to be a problem with the build 10041.

You can try uninstalling the audio drivers, re-start your PC and re-install your audio drivers.

But with the initial build of TP, there seems to be no problem.

Fix #23

Another user started using Intel Stick PC that came with 8.1. He then had sound problems with his HDMI device. The next day, he upgraded to 8.1 again and it was still unplugged

At release, it wasn’t working on the new OS. We fixed this a few weeks after launch by restoring backups from the older system. You can also try to fix this by reinstalling the program in old system compatibility mode.

Fix #22

As a Canadian consumer, I want to know about the warranty for any products that I buy from HP.

In this device, the HDMI audio is managed by the “Intel Graphics Driver” which we have nicknamed “Bay Trail.”

If you have problems with audio on a Windows PC, you can solve them by installing the latest graphics driver. Just make sure that when you update your drivers go for the Vista-compatible version of this driver.

You might be wondering why your computer or monitor is having issues producing sound, but it’s because of a lack of a yellow cable called an HDMI cable. This is the likely culprit to blame for your computer and desktop monitor not producing sound through the HDMI cord.

If your audio is too low, try installing the Realtek I2S Audio driver (version 6.2.9600.4075). You can also use the Speech API transcription feature as a sound alternative if it’s not working for you.

So sometimes updating the latest graphics, video drivers can also clear your audio problems.

Fix #21 – Sound not coming through HDMI Windows 10

You use an HDMI TV and Windows 10 laptop with Realtek HD Audio. You have it connected to your headphones or speakers but the sound isn’t being heard.

The output device is actually at fault, not Windows 10 or the driver utility. To fix this issue, you can do the following:

  1. Go to Device manager – > Sound, video and game controllers – > Realtek High definition audio
  2. Right-click on that item and choose Scan for hardware changes.
  3. In the list of audio devices, your TV or output device should be displayed. Just make that the default device

Fix #20

The same problem of audio not working dictates that you follow a particular sequence for switching on your devices. You just have to start with your laptop first because it will already have some sort of extension and then move on to your device and then the switch box.

  1. First power off your laptop.
  2. Then power on your TV.
  3. Now connect your Windows 10 laptop to a TV using an HDMI cable.
  4. Now switch on the laptop. # This last step should be the final one.

Fix #19

An alternate solution is to totally disperse with HDMI cables

To get HBO on your TV, you just need to use Google Chromecast or Amazon Fire Stick and connect it to your monitor.

Streaming video and audio is something you should be able to do on different applications like – YouTube, Netflix, HBO etc.

Windows 10 is an innovative and powerful operating system by Microsoft that can transform your personal computer into a very advanced digital hub with many applications.

But the solution works, but you need extra money in order to buy a firestick or any streaming device that allows you to mirror the desktop.

Fix #18

A completely different solution is to completely stop using Windows. You can better shift to Ubuntu or Mac, which have better compatibility with HDMI devices.

Fix #17

Sometimes, the problem with no audio on the monitor could be corrupted-system-files in Windows 10.

All you have to do is use a utility like System File Checker (SFC.exe) and Run as Administrator (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system-files).

Log files can come in handy when searching down problems with a PC. When you run CHKDSK, for example, it creates a log file somewhere on the system.

If Windows finds an issue with your hard drive, it logs details about it in the Chkdsk Log so that users will know why their computer isn’t working properly, and what they might do to fix things.

Fix #16

Sometimes when using HDMI you have no sound on TV with Windows 10.

The case can be when your laptop is connected to multiple monitors. You might have tried some earlier solutions like updating the audio driver, etc., but it is still in vain.

This is the strategy all gamers should follow in ensuring sound, picture and controls are all working properly on computers powered by Windows OS.

Some of your other monitors with audio working may display something else, but the monitor on the right shows up as “AV receiver” in an effort to get by without it.

First, you’re going to choose the “Extended Desktop to this Display” option. Then, all you have to do is plug the AV receiver into your computer via the audio ports and that should handle it.

Fix #16 – Go Back to Old Audio Driver

Sometimes the very first thing to try is reinstalling your sound drivers. Sometimes you encounter a conflict between different parts of your PC that actually cause this problem, so installing the right drivers can solve it.

Sometimes we need to rethink the changes that Microsoft brings because it’s normal for the updates to cause glitches of some kind and in this case, for example, it might just be a bad driver.

If your TV audio stops working with Windows 10 HDMI because the new audio drivers have a newer HDMI driver that doesn’t support older versions of Windows.

You can fix issues in the Device Manager by using the option to roll back to the old audio driver. This should fix whatever issues that may have been causing problems with your audio card.

Rollback” to the old audio driver

Fix #15

Sometimes the sound stops working due to Hyper-V installed.

Previously, you may have been using VirtualBox for Windows PC users and when the latest Hyper-V was released, we understand that reservations were made about updating your product to the Hyper-V.

You might have video but no audio.

Then you can try this fix.

  • Go to your Device Manager and from there find your Hyper-V device name.
  • If it’s enabled, just disable it and check with your audio.
  • If it’s disabled, enable it and check the status again.

So either disabling or enabling Hyper-V should restore your sound.

Fix #14

I find that most of the time, I’m working on my desktop PC and listening to some music or watching an online video with both my computer speakers and TV HDMI audio enabled in Windows 10.

In case you are looking to connect your laptop to an HD TV either via the RCA connectors or an HDMI cable, first, make sure that the volume on your laptop is turned down so that there’s no static (sound-related problems) while you’re doing so.

Fix #13 – Sound not going through HDMI Windows 10

There is a common misconception that your HDMI TV device is not visible in the list of Playback devices.

Disabling the HDMI audio device driver may be a solution to this. Try this fix first and then others can see what else can be done as well. You’ll also find links to other solutions that you might need in order to get your sound back up and running again.

  • In the Device Manager, at the top, you can select the option that says “Show Hidden devices“.
  • Under the System Devices tab, you can sometimes see the “High Definition Audio Controller” kind of thing. One
  • can be your onboard sound, laptop speakers and another HDMI sound.
  • They can show warning signs, that they are not working.
  • Then select your HDMI Audio Controller and to disable and re-enable it again.

Fix #12

Another fix is to power on both your Windows 10 laptop and your TV, but don’t connect your HDMI cable.

  1. After both power souces are switched on, you connect your HDMI cable.
  2. Your HDMI output device like monitor/TV should be visible under Sound, Video and Game Controllers in the form of the driver or device name.
  3. Right-click it and uninstall it. Then search for “Changes in Hardware” and make the available HDMI output device as default.

Then your no audio problem will be fixed.

Fix #11 – Download the right Intel or AMD HDMI drivers

Sometimes, the default Intel HD Graphics driver might be set as the audio driver when you install it on your existing motherboard.

This is the case if you don’t have specific speakers attached to your laptop or TV. Then you uninstall that driver and install the“Device with HDMI audio output support” external driver. Your HDMI audio should start working.

This blog post discusses how to fix graphics issues on both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows operating systems.

When installing graphic cards, wireless network adapters or legacy and integrated motherboards in Windows 10 for AMD chipsets (Advanced Micro Devices), users will have to find the correct audio drivers at its support page.

Fix #10

If you go to Device Manager and search through the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers section, you can find a lot of different audio drivers installed there. These are often from companies like NVIDIA or Realtek.

This is the case if you have multiple sound cards and speakers attached. When it comes to managing settings on your computer,

it’s important to update Windows through Windows Update so that when new hardware is installed or old hardware gets replaced, your operating system will be aware of all of the changes made and adjust accordingly.

First, delete Windows’ default audio driver. Then head to the website of your computer’s manufacturer and download the latest audio driver, ignoring Microsoft’s newer versions.

Now that you’re able to access your computer through your TV, you can multitask effectively by keeping track of what’s going on with both devices at the same time.

Fix #9

This solution is for all users who have problems with their Intel graphics cards.

For example, you have no sound on your Acer E5-571 laptop when connected to a Samsung TV via HDMI.

To start things off, you will have to uninstall the Intel Chipset Driver 10.1.1.7 and then reinstall it again. Next, uninstall the typical Intel (R) HD Graphics Family 15.40.3.4248 driver and then reinstall it once more afterwards.

Below are steps that will help solve the problem of your HDMI audio not being recognized by Windows 10.

Fix #8

When you have basic computer graphics but also some other special kinds of graphics, you know that you’ll never get the same kind of performance between them. Here’s a quick look at the differences and how to deal with both situations when you encounter them.

If you are experiencing HDMI issues, the source of the problem may not be the amplifier but may instead be your graphics card. This is because your graphics card controls all HD content over HDMI.

  • Disabling drivers signing(Can easily find on Google how to..);
  • Reinstalling Chipset driver from official computer’s manufacturer site;
  • Reinstalling Integrated graphics card driver from official manufacturer site;
  • Enabling drivers signing.

This should make your audio work again.

Fix #7

This sound issue with the Dell Inspiron 15 N5110 after the Win10 upgrade can essentially render music and movies inaudible from any source other than YouTube streaming. Although Microsoft drivers are being correctly installed, this problem persists.

  1. In that case, go to the Dell support site and provide required information like service tag etc.
  2. Then download Audio_IDT_W7 or the corresponding Win 10, driver.
  3. Install it and reboot.
  4. Even though it may be older than MS drivers, the HDMI device is visible and also Comms Headphone device.

Working now??

Fix #6

In some cases, when your new computer and/or software are interfering with audio/video output, you may face a great number of problems.

  1. Also, update your Video/Audio drivers in the first case and check again.
  2. You can also install the latest secondary graphic driver for Windows 10 and reboot.
  3. Then your HDMI device should be visible in Control Panel> Sounds.
  4. Right-Click your “Intel(R) Display Audio” device and select “Properties”. In the pop-up, on the Driver tab,
  5. disable it for a few seconds and enable it again. The HDMI device should be visible in your Sound > Playback devices.

Another fix is to go to the BIOS settings on your computer and make sure that both your on-board audio and your HDMI device are enabled.

Fix #5

Sometimes, it’s not enough to just have a surround audio system and a secondary graphics card. It may also be necessary to set up additional hardware like multiple displays and printers too so that you can explore what your new system is capable of.

Here are the steps for the Windows operating system. If you’re running a Mac, or Linux computer, just search for “Windows compatibility mode” instead of “windows 7 compatibility mode” and follow the same directions as below.

Fix #4

The Intel Core i5-5200u processor is one of the most powerful mobile chips in the market today. The Ultrabook uses this processor to boost its performance and since it comes with the latest vPro technology you’re sure to operate on a system that will be extra secure.

Fix #3

For example, a user with an external Acer monitor G276HL who is trying to connect his/her laptop with this monitor as well as getting older than Windows 7 and going on to Windows 10.

First, he tried the HDMI connection. However, it didn’t work. He finally resorted to using a standard VGA cable to connect his laptop to the projector screen. This ultimately worked for him, but there were still some problems, with loss of picture quality among other concerns.

Then he uninstalled all related Acer HDMI drivers and installed the original driver from Microsoft via “Compatibility Mode“. This worked for him.
